susan miller said it'd be a dazzling day for me...and boy, was she right! i woke up on the right side of the bed in a playful mood, ready to take on the day.
it was dec 3rd, but the sun & air were reminiscent of a mid-september morning. while i was catching up on some blog-reading & drinking vanilla nut coffee, i spotted an ad for the pop-up flea on secret forts. once i read the list of participants and noticed that the guys over at hickorees / the hill-side were involved, i knew this was an event that couldn't be missed. so i bundled up in my fall uniform (jeans, a buttondown, a "completer piece"- a striped wool blazer in this instance, and my clarks chukkas) and headed over to bleecker street.
the shop was packed. full of glorious american-made goods (ties, jeans, leather bags, etc), and men dressed in quintessential americana-with-a-hipster-twist style. in a word: bliss. i could have spent an entire year's pay there, but i refrained and instead took the window-shopping approach.

the flea was just the beginning of this wOnderful day. that afternoon i drove up to woodstock, ny with a car full of music lovers to see levon helm's midnight ramble.
the ramble is a very unique event. it takes place at levon helm's barn/recording studio which is attached to his home and can hold about 200 people. guests are encouraged to bring a dish to add to a pot-luck style buffet for all to enjoy. it's a very intimate setting where legendary artists and fans are gathered to enjoy music.
the show was amazing. perhaps the best of the year (and i've been to a lot this year). the acoustics in the barn were great, the energy of the crowd was high, and the talent in the room was unparalleled. we really lucked out because not only did we see Dawes, Levon Helm and other members of "The Band", but Donald Fagan (of Steely Dan) and Jackson Browne also made guest appearances! what a night!
